To celebrate our 42nd month together, Sid and I decided to go ahead with our plans last month (which I talked about here) to try a new place for dinner at Eastwood City. Since we weren’t very hungry (plus I didn’t have much of an appetite for the past few days because of my Dad’s accident), we decided to try PASTO, an Italian casual dining place.

Since I like cream-based pasta, we had alfredo (“spaghetti with fresh cracked pepper in a creamy parmesan sauce with grilled shrimp”), which cost Php195.00. I thought the price was a bit too steep if you consider that the serving is only for one, and it wasn’t anything out of this world. Like anything creamy, it’s easy to get tired or sick of it before you finish the whole dish (the Filipino term is “umay“), but the grilled shrimps balanced it out very nicely.

We had their proscuitto cotto pizza which had Italian smoked ham (proscuitto), asparagus, caramelized onions and mozzarella, which cost Php225.00. We, uh, actually chose it because proscuitto is ALWAYS mentioned in Everyday Italian, one of our favorite Food Network shows, and we’ve always been curious of how it tastes like. Funny, those Food Network hosts always say that prosciutto tastes like bacon, but I thought it tasted more like the fiesta ham we always have for Noche Buena (Christmas Eve dinner). The texture of some of the asparagus stalks were so stringy that we had to spit it out, but I loved the tomato sauce they used on the 12-inch, thin crust pizza. If they gave the pizza about an extra 3 to 5 minutes in the oven so that the crust would be crunchier and very very slightly burnt, it would have been perfect for me. But on the whole, I really liked it, and will definitely go back to try more of their pizza.

For dessert, we had torta al frutta (“creamy dreamy cheesecake with fruit toppings” – the one we ate had mangoes). It wasn’t as tasty as it looked – I didn’t like the texture of the cheesecake itself. It was flaky and was NOT creamy at all, and I kept wishing we headed to Heaven N’ Eggs for their mango crepe instead.

Potato Salad at PANCAKE HOUSE 28 July 2008

Last Saturday, Sidney and I went to PANCAKE HOUSE for their mango crepe, so that I can compare it to the one I had at Heaven N’ Eggs. Since we were already there, and since he was already hungry, he had the roast beef plate and iced tea while I had potato salad and mango crepe. Unfortunately, since I wasn’t planning on writing about the meal in my blog, I didn’t take pictures.

The roast beef plate was composed of roast beef (of course) and gravy, buttered corn and carrots, steamed rice, and a salad. The iced tea was obviously made from a ready mix (probably Nestea), and the salad dressing was too salty. But the roast beef was tender and the corn and carrots were really buttery, which I liked.

As previously mentioned, I had their mango crepe with ice cream (as opposed to mango crepe with whipped cream). It cost around Php140.00 I think and tasted pretty good, although it didn’t have enough mangoes. It had a drizzle of chocolate syrup, which was okay, although I’m not much of a chocolate-lover myself and would have preferred the sweet cream sauce of Heaven N’ Eggs.

I just have to say that their potato salad was probably the best I’ve tasted. I’ve had potato salad from Max’s Fried Chicken, Kenny Rogers Roasters and Stefano’s (at the Foodpark in The Enterprise Center) before, but theirs is the best, especially with lots of white pepper, as Sid pointed out. Unlike the other potato salads I’ve had, Pancake House’s didn’t have a lot of potato bits or cubes – the texture was a bit more like mashed potatoes and was very, very tasty. At only Php55.00, it was definitely a great deal for potato lovers like me. I had to share it with my boyfriend though, because although he never liked potato salad before, he liked this one. That just goes to show how good it was.

Heavenly Crepes at HEAVEN N’ EGGS 28 July 2008

To celebrate our 41st month together, Sid and I decided to try a new place for dinner at Eastwood City. However, when we got there, it was raining really hard and we couldn’t get to the other side or walk around without getting wet. We finally decided to eat at good old Heaven N’ Eggs since it was nearest to the parking lot. It also helped that the manager outside offered everyone passing by free appetizers to fill up their nearly empty place.

Unfortunately, since I wasn’t planning on writing about it in my blog, I don’t really remember everything we ordered and didn’t take pictures. I had some kind of breaded steak with mashed potatoes (yum) and vegetables. Sid was on breakfast mode and had ham and grilled tomatoes with garlic potatoes. I liked his order better because it reminded me a lot of my everyday breakfast at the Sturdy’s Castle in Oxford, England.

We’ve always liked the iced tea at Heaven N’ Eggs, but their mango crepe was by far the best I’ve ever tasted. The crepe was filled with two huge slices of sweet, ripe mango, and there’s a very delectable sauce of sweet cream and mango bits, plus a scoop of ice cream on the side. It cost Php180.00 but was worth every cent. Once I get to have mango crepe at Heaven N’ Eggs again, I’ll be sure to take a picture and post it here.

After having that scrumptious mango crepe, I had a huge craving over the weekend for more, so I tried the mango crepe at Pancake House, Frio Mixx and Crunchy Crepes (at the Foodpark in The Enterprise Center). The crepe at Heaven N’ Eggs is still the best.
